When the engineers at Fujifilm talk about the design principles they brought to the FinePix X100 and, now, the X-Pro1 digital cameras, they talk about “integrity”. They complain that the advent of the digital camera robbed photography of its integrity, and that they had the restoration of integrity in mind when the two cameras were on the drawing board.

It’s tempting to dismiss the sentiment as some sort of mawkish marketing flim flam designed to capitalise on this decade’s nostalgia for the 1960s. But hold an X-Pro1 in your hands, use it for a couple of days, and you begin to see what they mean. Something was lost in the race to the megapixel, and the X-Pro1 (far more than the X100, which had foibles and flaws) goes a long way to restoring it.

  I even got a job on the flight, to partner with an un-accompanied 10 year old boy, his mother and 3 other children were on the same flight.   My job was in the Technical Library, it was our job to find the right numbers so our "customer" could order the right part.   I was assigned to the Naval Supply Depot at the Naval Base in Yokosuka, it's a very large base with a lot of activity.   I was an Aviation Storekeeper but that didn't matter, we did all parts, food mixers to torpedo tubes, and Fruit fly Larvae to jet engines.   It was what we would call "old technology" at piston engine C118.   The flight began at Travis Air Force Base near Sacramento California.   We had stops in Hawaii and Wake Island, total flight time almost eighteen hours....

Well, if you have seen a good solid review from a website that you are familiar with, which includes good, solid image samples from a production model…that is one thing..but this whole thing with the XPro1 is absurd. I have not seen a sharp image yet and everyone is ordering this thing, and we are not talking $600 here……it is really funny..I guess cameras ARE the new fashion accessory!

I wouldn’t be surprised if a large amount of people/resellers are scooping up preorders with the hope that there will be a repeat of the X100 shortage, and the inflated prices that followed. I’d be surprised if that were to happen, since Fuji are better able to anticipate demand this time around. Regardless, Micro Four Thirds will remain my mirrorless system, for now.

Despite its overall rectangular shape, which is typical of traditional rangefinder cameras, the Fuji X-Pro1 feels reasonably comfortable in the hand thanks to the textured rubberised grip on its front. It lacks the bulk of the average DSLR's grip, but it provides purchase and makes the camera feel secure in your grasp. In comparison with the cohort of compact system cameras (CSCs) that has been launched over recent months, Fuji's new X-Pro1 seems quite large. It isn't so much a CSC competitor as an advanced DSLR or rangefinder rival.

When the company launched its EasyShare series in 2007, the printers sold for a little more than comparable models offered by competitors, but the cost of Kodak's ink cartridges was about 50 percent lower. In recent years, the mobile phone market has been based on the premise of giving you a phone for free or at a steeply discounted price in exchange for your commitment to a long-term service contract. And of course there are inkjet printers, which are given away with new computers or sold at a low price so that the manufacturers can make money selling you ink cartridges. The cost strategy helped the company establish a beachhead, but the quality of the prints it produces will ultimately be what sets Kodak apart.
