Since my total budget was $1000, I wanted to buy a camera for around the $600 mark. I looked at a number of cameras and compared picture quality but to my untrained eye they all looked fairly similar, so I decided to choose a camera based on a specific set of features that I wanted, which were: a built-in hot shoe, an audio input jack and a threaded lens.

The hot shoe is good for attaching external accessories such as lights or microphones. Unfortunately, the Canon HF200 comes with Canon’s Mini Advanced Shoe which is smaller than the industry standard shoe and therefore does not fit any of the accessories currently on the market that use the regular shoe size. Canon does this so that you are forced to buy Canon specific accessories, but the list of accessories from Canon is rather slim and so I found the use for the built-in hot shoe rather limited. In the end I bought a Sima SLB-M bracket to mount my Sony UWP-V1 wireless microphone.

had a rare clear night in western Oregon for the Lyrid meteor shower.
I'm not really much of an astronomy buff, but I gave it a try. I shot
this looking east above our barn in rural Douglas County, Oregon. I
pushed the ISO way up and the camera captured more meteors than I saw
with my eye. I car drove past during this 30-second exposure. Since someone asked for the technical details here they are: Nikon D4, Nikon 24-70 f/2.8 lens (set to 24mm and f/2.8), ISO 2500, single 30-second exposure....

Manfrotto modopocketの簡単紹介

大きさの割りに重量感 がありしっかりとデジ カメを支えてくれそう です。 一応、耐えられる重さ は500ｇまでとあります 。 非常に小さく、値段も お安いので一つあると 便利だと思います。

What should I get first? (Tripod or External Flash)?

Camera: D90
Lens: 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6

I shoot almost everything, but I can't decide which one to get first. I don't know which one is more useful.

Get both! My honest advice is get a flash, but not the SB900. Unless you really need TTL flash control & all the 'bells & whistles', you're better off buying a cheaper manual speedlight & saving your money.

The tripod will give you more stability if that's an issue for you. If you're doing portrait work I'd get the external flash first.

I'd recommend you buy the tripod first. There are many situations where you have to prevent camera shake (in low light areas, night shots and so on). The tripod comes handy for that kind of photography.

Both tripod and external flash are good to have. Between the two, I use a tripod more.

It would depend on what you need more. If you find yourself cursing at blurred action shots then the tripod would be your first choice. If you are constantly troubled by your weak built-in flash then the Speedlight would help you more.

I have to agree that the joystick head, or any kind of ball-head isn't going to work for video. You need a panning head. Just go to a store with a display and try panning a joystick and you'll see why.
