One of the draws of HD sports cameras like the ContourHD series (or the GoPro HD Hero) is that they feature a wide variety of mounting options, making them useful in a wide variety of activities. However, purchasing all of the available mounting accessories can get expensive, which is why Contour has announced a series of activity-themed mounting kits that bundle specific mounting accessories at a 10 to 20 percent discount over buying the bits separately.
Since my total budget was $1000, I wanted to buy a camera for around the $600 mark. I looked at a number of cameras and compared picture quality but to my untrained eye they all looked fairly similar, so I decided to choose a camera based on a specific set of features that I wanted, which were: a built-in hot shoe, an audio input jack and a threaded lens.
The hot shoe is good for attaching external accessories such as lights or microphones. Unfortunately, the Canon HF200 comes with Canon’s Mini Advanced Shoe which is smaller than the industry standard shoe and therefore does not fit any of the accessories currently on the market that use the regular shoe size. Canon does this so that you are forced to buy Canon specific accessories, but the list of accessories from Canon is rather slim and so I found the use for the built-in hot shoe rather limited. In the end I bought a Sima SLB-M bracket to mount my Sony UWP-V1 wireless microphone.

When the engineers at Fujifilm talk about the design principles they brought to the FinePix X100 and, now, the X-Pro1 digital cameras, they talk about “integrity”. They complain that the advent of the digital camera robbed photography of its integrity, and that they had the restoration of integrity in mind when the two cameras were on the drawing board.
It’s tempting to dismiss the sentiment as some sort of mawkish marketing flim flam designed to capitalise on this decade’s nostalgia for the 1960s. But hold an X-Pro1 in your hands, use it for a couple of days, and you begin to see what they mean. Something was lost in the race to the megapixel, and the X-Pro1 (far more than the X100, which had foibles and flaws) goes a long way to restoring it.

One of the most intriguing aspects of photography is that it's both an art and a science. Science tells us that, for most photos, there's a specific amount of light that will generate the "perfect" exposure--sort of like measuring chemicals in a laboratory. But it's not all test tubes and Bunsen burners in photography, because there are a million ways to get the right amount of light into your scene. Lots of different shutter speeds and aperture settings add up to the right exposure, for example. You're already had a chance to experiment with that using an interactive online camera simulator . And therein lies the art: No two photographers will ever capture the same scene in exactly the same way. This week, let's zero in on shutter speed and talk about how you can get a variety of different photo effects and visual styles just by varying this one camera control.
